R&D in China
With a long term commitment to China and in consideration of the huge market potential in China, Novo Nordisk established Novo Nordisk (China) R&D Center, a world class R&D Center, in Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area on Jan 25th 2002. It is the first R&D center established in China by international bio-pharmaceutical companies with the focus on biotech, and currently also one of two R&D units that Novo Nordisk established outside Denmark. Due to the excellent research conducted by the center since its establishment and the strategic decision by Novo Nordisk to increase investment in China, Novo Nordisk (China) R&DCenter has been relocated to Beijing ZhongGuanCun Life Science Park since July 1st 2004. In preparation for a better development, the center was registered as an independent company in April 2006, named “Beijing Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals Science and Technology Co., Ltd., and has kept growing steadily.
Novo Nordisk (China) R&DCenter has advanced R&D facilities, world class research environment and creative talents from China and abroad. Currently, the center has three research departments: Molecular Biology, Protein Chemistry, and Cell Biology Department. The center's research management team and project leaders are scientists and experts with extensive research experiences gained in US or Europe. The center's main research area is therapeutic protein discovery and development, with the current focus on technology development and application for protein expression and purification. As an integral part of Novo Nordisk Global R&D, the center takes part in various drug discovery projects, and conducts advanced research of international level with the cutting edge biotech tools and methodologies.
Novo Nordisk is committed to introduce state of the art technologies, advanced research achievements and attract high-level talents into china. On March 4th 2007, Novo Nordisk and the ChineseAcademy of Science (CAS) established NN-CAS Foundation to fund or co-fund activities of common interest within the fields of diabetes and biopharmaceuticals. In June 2007, Novo Nordisk decided to sponsor the “CAS-NN Great Wall Professorships” with additional donation of 1 million USD.Going forward Novo Nordisk (China) R&D Center will establish and keep communications with Chinese biotech organizations, and establish broad collaborations with Chinese biomedical institutes and universities. We wish to contribute to the advancement of biotech research and application in China for the benefit of Chinese patients and medical professionals.
