Novo Nordisk Global R&D
NovoNordisk is a focused healthcare company with biotechnological expertise. In terms of R&D, the strong focus is reflected by the worldwide leadership position that we have maintained within the area of diabetes research for more than 8 decades. Likewise, the biotech expertise that characterizes both our research and development units is evidenced by the many biopharmaceuticals that have been discovered and developed by Novo Nordisk: human insulin, insulin aspart, insulin detemir, growth hormone, FVIIa and glucagon.
Novo Nordisk has an annual R&D spend in excess of half a billion euros, allowing us to access the various technologies that are a prerequisite for speed, quality and competitiveness of our effort. Within this framework, it is also possible for us to pay serious attention to bioethical aspects of work. Globally, more than 3000 people are working together on R&D activities at Novo Nordisk in a number of very diverse areas: basic and discovery research, preclinical and clinical development, production/formulation and delivery of drug substance, regulatory, quality, licensing, patenting, portfolio management, bioethics plus other areas.
Our ability to master protein expression in bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells is complemented by similar cutting edge capabilities within protein drug delivery. The above three sets of competences - research into diabetes, proteins and the delivery of these - form the basis for our R&D strategy which aims at providing diabetes care leadership and furthermore, at making a difference in other areas of unmet therapeutic need where we can fulfill these competitively by using our biotechnological platform.
